A Polkadot Red With The Smell Of Snuff

I said hello to a man in a truck

checking some asphalt patches on the pavement

He reminded me of my father

in his working clothes

& his khaki shirt

& his frisco jeans

& his old hat

& his wrinkles all over his brown face

& I remembered when I was four

& found my father’s handkerchief

in the back pocket of his workpants

& it was a polkadot red

& smelled of snuff
